Mecca Masjid

Mecca Masjid is the largest mosque in the Hyderabad city, which is also known as Makkah Masjid. It has a capacity of 10,000 worshippers. The mosque was constructed during the 17th century. It is a state-protected monument. It is the main mosque for the Old City of Hyderabad. It is near the historic landmarks of Charminar and Laad Bazaar.

Muhammad Qutb Shah, who was the 6th ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, specially made bricks to be made from the soil that was brought from Mecca. It was the holiest site of Islam, and he used them in the building of the central arch of the mosque. So, Mecca Masjid got its name.

Makkah Masjid was built by Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah. The construction of Mecca Masjid started in the year 1617 CE. It was during the rule of Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah. He laid its foundation stone. Eight thousand workers were employed to build the mosque. It was fully done by Aurangzeb in 1694 CE.
